Humpbacks & High-Rises is an independent not for profit research organisation dedicated to the research and protection of whales and dolphins in south-east Quensland. We focus our research and protection strategies on coastal impacts caused by urbanization for the benefits of marine mammals and the urban communities.
Our mission is to ensure present and future generations of the community have access to enjoy, appreciate and care for Humpback whales and other charismatic marine mammals.
We aim to provide adaptation strategies for whales in urbanised waters and bring the community closer to the whales and sustain whale watching at the Gold Coast for future generations. We do this by improving the understanding about Humpback whales and dolphins through the collection of data on physical water properties, investigate their abundance, distribution, behaviour and movement patterns and to establish community involvement in the Gold Coast “bay” area and beyond.
We collect, analyse and publish information on marine mammals for the public with the support of our community members. Our results show that the Gold Coast bay functions as an important resting spot for mothers with calves and is becoming a calving ground as well. We studied the behaviour of over 2000 individuals over multiple seasons and discovered very similar resting behaviour shown for Hervey Bay. Our findings have implications for the management of Gold Coast coastal waters and also demonstrate that it is very important to share the waters with our gentle giants so they can safely rest.

FAQs
What kind of volunteer activities will I do?
Volunteers spend time on commercial whale-watching boats, learning about whale and dolphin species, identification, biology, behaviour, and how to photograph the animals for research purposes.
You may also help with data collection, data entry and analysis, fluke matching, community engagement, ocean education, and public awareness activities. Some volunteers may assist with design or software-related tasks, depending on skills and project needs.
What happens on a whale survey trip?
Each whale survey trip is around 3 hours. Volunteers must arrive at the boat departure point at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time to ensure they do not miss the boat.
Upon arrival, volunteers collect their tickets and survey equipment, then prepare the gear while heading out to sea. Once a pod of whales is sighted, the survey begins and continues until the vessel returns to port. Further details about survey activities are explained during the training seminar.
Do I need previous marine or conservation experience?
No previous experience is required. Full guidance and supervision are provided by Humpbacks & High-Rises. Students just need enthusiasm, commitment, and a genuine interest in marine conservation.
Is the volunteer program seasonal?
Yes. Whale conservation activities operate between 1 June and 31 October, which aligns with the annual whale migration season on the Gold Coast.
What do I need to do before I start?
Before commencing the Whale Conservation Volunteer program, students must attend a mandatory Whale Conservation orientation. Students should plan to start their English course at BROWNS at least one week before the orientation date.
